>> long lines are forming at stores as people stock up on the essentials. places like home depot are selling out of supplies. they're flying off the shelves. several area road crews are on stand by as the winter weather approaches. >> let's get a look at the forecast with chuck bell. >> good morning to both of you and good morning everybody. welcome to what promises to be a fairly busy weather weekend across the area. not much is going to happen today ichlts tomorrow. all eyes on your sunday. so be ready for a busy day of preparations today. winter storm watches are all across the area with exceptions of extreme southern maryland. this is for tomorrow, everybody. right now temperatures are generally above the freezing mark. mid to upper 30s around the area. the rain showers we had late last night are moving into parts of southern marilyn and moving away. that's the end of the rain

threat. saturday planner, clearing and breezy right now. temperatures up to the low and mid 40s for a time but there will be an opportunity for snow tomorrow morning. could get an inch to two inches of snow in places. then we'll have to worry about ice. i'll be back to talk to you about that and give you more on the forecast. >> and for the latest weather on the go, check out our storm team 4 weather app. it's available on itunes and google play. police are trying to figure out who shot and killed a man in the district. this happened after midnight on baits street. this is near 4th in northwest. they found the man suffering from gunshot wounds. he was pronounced dead on the scene. an american jailed for more than a month in north korea is on his way to the u.s. he arrive at an airport late last night. he's on a flight to san

francisco. they decided to release him after his apology for his alleged crimes during the korean war and his health. he talked to reporters about his journey home. >> very glad to be on my way home. i can appreciate the tolerance the government has given to me on on my way. >> how do you feel now? physical physically? >> good. feel good. >> okay. what do you want to do, first thing? >> what would you like to do? >> go home and see my wife. >> newman was north korea on a tourist visa. he was taken off a plane in october. >> it's been two days since the death of nelson mandela and we're looking at live pictures from outside his home in johannesburg. people have been leaving flowers in memory of the former president.

meanwhile in washington the embassy has a condolence book for mandela. it's available until 2 tuesday evening on madison avenue. they gathered to remember mandela's legacy. >> reporter: mourners sing hymns honoring the life and legacy of nelson mandela at the south african embassy. people signed condolence books that read friends and relatives. they say he had compassion for humanity and made a sacrificed for the oppressed. spending a quarter of his life in prison for fighting against the apartheid. >> that was an even time. >> reporter: she signed her name. she is visiting d.c. from south africa. >> to see and know and experience a man with such love and compassion that can come out of prison after 27 years without any hatred. >> she along with hundreds of

people pay respects leaving flowers, cards, candles and personal notes at the foot of the majestic mandela statue showing the iconic leader raise his fist for justice. >> i think that it's been tremendous. >> reporter: the outpouring of love from d.c., maryland, and virginia overwhelmed south african ambassador. >> what are you going to miss most about nelson mandela? >> his presence. we have not seen him governing or speaking but we have always been assured that he's with us. >> thank god for the life of nelson mandela. >> news 4. people in south africa as well as leaders from around the world are getting ready for more than a week of mourning. >> tomorrow is a national day of prayer and reflection at synagogues, churches and mosques

throughout south africa. and then the official memorial service and he will lie in state at the buildings in petoria and one week from tomorrow is his burial in his childhood village. we're still waiting to hear if jimmy carter will join three other living u.s. presidents there next week. they will be accompanied by george w. bush and his wife laura and former president bill clinton and former secretary of state hilary clinton will also attend. george h.w. bush is not able to travel. the mega millions jackpot is growing. no one matched all the numbers in last night's drawing. here's the winning numbers. 11, 29, 44, 63, 64. the mega ball is number 3.

john kerry discuss the country's relationship with israel. it's part of a weekend forum hosted by d.c. based center for policy. happening at the willard continental in northwest d.c. and the israeli prime minister netanyahu will also be at the event. pearl harbor caused the u.s. to enter world war ii. they'll participate in a wreath laying cemetery at the too many of the unknowns to honor the troops killed in the attacks. it's normally reserved for dignitaries like the president. they were selected for their leadership. more than 2400 americans died in the japanese air raid in 1941. vice president joe biden took part in the wreath laying ceremony at the memorial in

police in prince george's county are looking for two men they believe broke into 15 businesses in one night. officers say the people in this surveillance photo broke into the business on friday, november 29th. in the pictures they're seen stealing cash from restaurants and stores along the corridor. detectives believe these men might have broken into several other retailers in the area. >> and police are offering a $10,000 reward for information that helps them find these two men. according to the officers, they held up a couple and their young child at gun point inside the family's home. they're using this footage to look for more clues. the two men forced their way into their home last week as the

mother was walking inside the house. the men stole several items from the home and the family's cadillac escalade was also gone. no one was hurt in the incident. $500,000 worth of pot was found in one laurel home overnight. wbal's george has more on the bus that stopped the home grown operation. >> reporter: this is 180 pounds of marijuana. worth about 1 half a million dollars. earlier friday it was seized from what appeared to be a moving van sitting at a holiday inn express. laurel's drug investigation team noticed something suspicious from the van. a canine unit confirmed what was inside. all of the marijuana wrapped in moving boxes in an attempt to conceal a drug operation. >> it's right time. right time. we do a lot of investigations at hotels for possible drug activity or suspicious activity

or criminal activity. they were in the right place at the right time. the dog alerted and worked the way it should. >> victor is under arrest. he is the person the van was registered to and officers found him in one of the hotel rooms. he is charged with intent to distribute but they're not revealing how much they know about this drug trade. verizon crews are repairing damaged phone cables causing outcampers in virginia. they cut five near falls churng on thursday. verizon says they're working around the clock to restore phone service in that area. the rain and traffic caused repair delays but everything should be up and running by wednesday. now to more on our winter storm watch. while we wait for the wintry weather to arrive, parts of the south have been fighting it for days. take a look at this back up.

caused by a truck skidding off the road and not being able to get back on. drivers were dealing with a thick layer of ice on most of the roadways as well as the bridges. the sheriff's office confirmed at least 70 crashes on the highway since the weather moved into the area. now those conditions also lead to hundreds of businesses closing down and millions of residents staying inside their homes. the weather even caused the cancellation of tomorrow's annual dallas marathon along with the st. jude's marathon in memphis. >> in arkansas they caused massive outer outages for people across the street. they're trying to recreate the power as temperatures aren't expected to get above 30 for the next few days. they also have airlines canc canceling flights in and out of the area. that's where it gets treacherous. >> that is making its way to the northeast. >> it's hard to believe it was

so mild around here days ago. that air is being shoved out to sea and we have the cold air coming back into the area on your saturday morning. it's not going to be a bad day today. today you need to get everything done you need to get done outside this weekend. prepare to be inside tomorrow and plan to stay inside tomorrow and off of the area roadways. especially on a day you don't have to go somewhere, better to just stay at home and take it easy as it's going to be a prolonged stretch of what could be dangerous driving conditions around our area. that's the view outside this morning across downtown washington. skies are starting to clear out a bit. 39 degrees right now. winds out of the north averaging 13 miles per hour and that north wind is going to be with us for the remainder of the day. so cold and breezy and dry for your saturday. 34 in hagerstown. 35 degrees in martinsburg.

stafford, southern, maryland. charles county, all in the upper 30s this morning. is weather story for today, cold and dry outside. tomorrow, that's when things get interesting. it's probably going to be snow at the on set of this event for tomorrow. snowing around daybreak tomorrow morning up until about lunchtime tomorrow. could get a dusting. maybe an inch or so in and around the immediate metro area. areas to the north and west, lou din county, frederick county, washington county maryland, 1 to 2 inches of snow possible. so enough to talk about. tomorrow ach and tomorrow night and potentially into monday morning, that's when we really need to be careful. there could be significant icing problems on the roadways. especially to the north and west of town. this could be a prolonged stretch of icy weather. that's sunday morning through monday morning. today your out and about planner, partly cloudy. chilly today but not that bad. highs in the low to mid 40s for

a time. all the warm air we have been enjoying, that's getting shoved out to sea. you can see the big area of rain showers off the eastern seaboard now. that's where it's going to stay. cold and dry. we will get sunshine. a bit breezy at times. clouds coming back in after midnight and by daybreak it will be mostly cloudy. here we are at 6:00 a.m. on our forecast. between 6:00 a.m. and noon tomorrow the snow chances will be at the highest. then after lunchtime tomorrow, the warmer air aloft tries to change a lot of the snow over to sleet or freezing rain mix. this is going to be a dicey call. cold and breezy. temperatures in the low 40s today. tomorrow, snow first. then a chance for freezing rain or sleet during the course of the day. gradually becoming mostly rain in and around the metro area but temperatures hovering in the freezing mark sunday night into monday morning and it's a very

>> reporter: mgm's proposed location set it apart from its competitors. >> mgm has a better location. mgm is three to four minutes closer to almost everybody in the marketplace. >> reporter: consul tanlts told the video lottery commission that most gamblers will come from virginia. the location at the belt way outweighs the advantage of parks wanting a larger casino. >> they're starting with the premise that three to four minutes matters. which it doesn't. >> reporter: the ceo is challenging the reports. he wants his casino to go off of indian head highway. all sites are ten minutes apart. she agreed that driving a few minutes to the raceway shouldn't mean more money for the state. >> the one commissioner's question was if there's only one choice, what does three or four minutes matter? >> they project mgm to have

new this morning, police are looking for the person that shot and killed a man in the district. the deadly shooting happened just after midnight on bates street near first and northwest. he was pronounced dead on the scene. police haven't released the victim's identity. >> an 85-year-old veteran is on his way home after he was detained in north korea for a

saturday off to a cold and breezy start today. like you were mentioning, today is the day you get out and get all of your errands run. no problems on the road today. tomorrow you need to plan to go ahead and stay inside tomorrow. luckily it's a sunday so it should lower the impact a touch. winter storm watches are across the entire area. z the lone exceptions are into far south maryland. all rain from last night is working through the lower part of the bay and the eastern shore. so your planner today, partly cloudy and chilly, temperatures in the low 40s this afternoon. overnight tonight into the evening hours. temperatures back down below freezing by about 11:00 tonight and by tomorrow morning, temperatures mid to upper 20s and snow flakes are likely around sunrise tomorrow and then a mix of sleet, snow, freezing rain and rain during the afternoon and potentially more ice tomorrow night into monday morning. we'll talk more about that and

knig nightly visuals at 7:00 in the evening. t tom spoke to leaders that feel a special connection to mandela's work. >> for 30 years he lead the metropolitan washington counsel. he gets giddy when talking about meeting nelson mandela here in 1990. i was saying it's such an honor to meet you. i said madiba. it just came out of my mouth. the colorful posting is from 1994 when williams was an election watcher in south africa. but williams really likes the picture taken with mandela. at the afl headquaters here because of mandela's fierce support for labor. >> that's the picture he will always cherish. he was in the house of labor. >> on capitol hill, eleanor

holmes norton has her own memories of south africa's history. she was among four civil law right leaders who helped sparks months of demonstrations that helped bring about reform in south africa and freedom for trade unions there. she said it was time to celebrate his long and worthy life of making life better for many people. >> there's not a lot to mourn if you consider the life he lived and his gift to the world. we always mourn for the passing of one of the great men of our time. but in south africa, they're dancing. they are jubilant because their freedom is a straight line from his sacrifice. the national museum of african art is another place to sign a condolence book for mandela. it will be available until next

friday during regular visiting hours. you can also post messages on the website or facebook page. metro is doing track work on all five rail lines this morning i. could put a wrench in your plans. in northern virginia, the arlington cemetery station is closed this weekend. you can take a free shuttle bus and you can only get to arlington cemetery on a bus leaving the pentagon city station. you may have to wait as much as 20 minutes between the trains on all five lines. this morning you have a new transit option if you're coming to or leaving d.c. starting today, you have the brand new option of using marc's trains on the weekend. let's say you want to visit baltimore's inner harbor or get to bwi but don't want to deal with all the traffic on the belt

criminal activity. >> it's hitting the air waves. >> see something suspicious, snap it and send it. >> while police are promoting the effort local law enforcement will have access to the tips as well. officers were on hand to support the launch. >> first concern, privacy. >> some see the benefits to the country but also worry about unnecessary tracking. the luxury of being anonymous is taken away from you because they have your cell phone number and information. >> reporter: but state police say they won't actively track users and they promise if the information collected is not useful it will be deleted. >> there's no archiving of tips or maintaining a collection data base. >> reporter: she decided to download the app right in front of us. >> it's con convenient. everybody has apps now.

have home games. you're asked to take public transportation as possible. and more trains running between d.c. and baltimore this even. but even with the forecast, some say bring on the cold. >> i want a nice long two week vacation of snow, snow, snow. >> not sure if that's on tap any time soon but looks like the first real taste of winter precipitation is coming. adam tuss, news 4. >> i like that guy's spirit. >> no thank you. >> watch what you wish for. >> i can wish for it all i want to. that's not what is going to happen. we can have ice and sleet and freezing rain. but all snow, not going to happen. >> this is what a lot of parents in my community are talking about. are we going to get the stuff that we can build a snow man? >> this is not going to be a good snowman making event i. could be a slushy five or six inch tall snowball man.
